In order to obtain a Secondary School Diploma(OSSD) from the Province of Ontario , students must enroll and earn credits in a total of 30 courses made up of 18 Compulsory Courses and 12 Optional Courses. In addition to these courses, each student must successfully write and pass the Provincial Literacy Test. The requirements for the OSSD are detailed as follow:

  • 18 Compulsory Credits as follows:
  • 4 credits in English (1 credit per grade)
  • 3 credits in mathematics (1 credit must be completed in Grade 11 or 12)
  • 2 credits in science
  • 1 credit in Canadian history
  • 1 credit in Canadian geography
  • 1 credit in the arts
  • 1 credit in health and physical education
  • 1 credit in French as a second language
  • 0.5 credit in career studies
  • 0.5 credit in civics
  • One Credit from Group 1
      • English or French as a second language
      • a Native language
      • a classical or an international language
      • social sciences and the humanities
      • Canadian and world studies
      • Guidance and career education

     

  • One Credit from Group 2
      • health and physical education
      • the arts
      • business studies
      • French as a second language

     

  • One Credit from Group 3
    • Science (GradeĀ 11 orĀ 12)
    • Technological education
    • French as a second language
    • Computer studies

In addition to the above courses, each student pursuing the OSSD must complete:

  • 12 Optional Credits
  • The Provincial Literacy Test
  • 40 Hours of Community Service
